(More customer reviews)I am making a tree frog vivarium with a waterfall. I found these hydroballs on amazon and thought they would be perfect. My main objective being protecting my waterfall pump from getting gunked up. I've dealt with many pumps in the past in various mediums, including fish tanks and fish ponds. When I recieved the hydroballs...I was suprised to see that they were very broken...fractured into tiny peices. I went ahead and rinsed the balls really well to get the "dirt" off. Well, even after rinsing them for a very long time...they still seemed to release "dirt". Also, many tiny peices can be shook out through the collander holes, to what seems to be no end. I plan to still use the hydroballs...but instead of being under the barrier of the waterfall like the pump instructions suggests, I will put them on top of the barrier. I also plan to put a layer of large rocks around my pump followed by gravel. I think the hydro balls will be benefical to the vivarium environment because fo the healthy organisms they will harbor and also the humidity they will produce from holding water. I'm not sure the hydroballs would be in the same shape if I had bought them at the store. But even then...the hydroballs would have still been shipped.
